H.264 Introduction H.264 Introduction
¡¡¡¡ The ES-4000 range of PCI image capture and compression cards is based on H.264/MPEG4-AVC compression standards. The ES-4004H offers simultaneous real-time encoding of four video and audio streams and is the first real time H.264 compression subsystem on the market. This new standard has much higher compression ratio, yet higher picture quality compared with standard MPEG4.
¡¡¡¡ At the same video quality, the bit rate is about 40% lower than MPEG4-ASP.
¡¡¡¡ The perfect synchronisation of video and G.722 compressed audio ensures that it can be used in almost all applications, such as video surveillance and security, VOD (video-on-demand), distance learning, streaming video and broadcasting.
¡¡¡¡ The ES-4004H uses four media processors, each with its own video input, VIP (video input processor), plus memory and PCI interface.
¡¡¡¡ The heavily optimised H.264/MPEG4-AVC codec runs on each processor.
¡¡¡¡ The A/V streams are fed into the memory of the video display adapter directly without consuming any host CPU MIPS, as a result any PC is able to support four ES-4004H cards (16 channels) concurrently in real time, and more if there are more than four PCI slots.
¡¡¡¡ In addition to the ES-4004H there is a two-channel version, the ES-4002H and a single channel version, the ES-4001H.
¡¡¡¡ Each board comes with drivers, an encoder application and decoding multimedia player.
¡¡¡¡ The PCI 2.2 compliant boards, run under Linux, Windows XP and Windows 2000.
¡¡¡¡ All parameters for each channel can be set or adjusted independently and the software also offers picture quality control, adjustable frame rate, motion detection, time stamping and watermark support.
¡¡¡¡ A board support package is also available for those who wish to develop their own software and includes: encoder SDK, decoder SDK, network SDK, SDK documentation, source code for the encoder application, source code for multimedia player, source code for streaming server application, and one year of technical support.
¡¡¡¡ The new H.264/MPEG4-AVC video compression standard is the first to be ratified by both the ISO/IEC and ITU-T.
¡¡¡¡ It raises the bar considerably compared with MPEG4-ASP and yields better picture quality while significantly lowering the bit rate.
¡¡¡¡ This allows lower overall system cost and enables new video applications.
¡¡¡¡ H.264/MPEG4-AVC is considered the greatest achievement in video compression in the past 10 years and is already finding its way into many mainstream video applications.
¡¡¡¡ Boards are available for immediate delivery and prices start around GBP 740 for one-off quantities.
¡¡¡¡ H.264 is the latest and most advanced video standard developed jointly by ITU and MPEG. H.264/AVC provides a far more efficient algorithm for compressing video than any other compression method available. It typically outperforms all existing standards by a factor of three to four especially in comparison to MPEG-2.
